There’s a lot of faulty information out there about the winter real estate market, and sometimes this can deter motivated sellers from making a move. In order to get a better idea of what our market is actually like during the later months of the year, let’s go over three common myths about selling during the winter season:

Myth No. 1: “There aren’t any buyers looking for homes in the winter.” Survey data shows that while the number of buyers does dip slightly toward the end of the year, the amount of available inventory drops even more. In other words, there are still more buyers looking for homes at this time of year than there are properties for them to buy. This gives sellers a unique opportunity to stand out and take advantage of high demand. Better yet, the buyers who are out looking for homes in the winter tend to be more serious than those looking at other times of year. These buyers, who may be relocating or have time off of work for the holidays, will generally be more willing to pay top dollar for the right house.

Between the high demand, low competition, and emotional incentives that sellers have working to their advantage at this time of year, the winter months are a perfect time to get a great price for your home.

Myth No. 2: “It’s hard to deal with showings during the winter.” Although the holidays do make this a busy time of year, it’s quite easy for sellers to pick and choose when they want their home to be available for showings, since serious buyers will be happy to work around your schedule. As an added bonus, buyers are more emotional during the holidays, so winter showings give you the chance to play on their heartstrings and secure a great deal.

Myth No. 3: “People won’t pay top dollar for homes in the winter.” As you can probably gather from what we’ve already shared, this simply isn’t true. Between the high demand, low competition, and emotional incentives that sellers have working to their advantage at this time of year, the winter months are a perfect time to get a great price for your home.
